Our Story

VisiPlate was first conceived by three undergraduates at the University of Pennsylvania in 2016. As juniors studying business and engineering, Rui Jing, Adarsh, and Brandon saw an opportunity to apply their interdisciplinary skills to commercializing a novel nanotechnology invented at Penn for the greater good.  Fast forward to today, when we've built a diverse and expert team around our mission to restore health and promote vitality.

Brandon Kao, CTO

Brandon brings experience in nano-material fabrication and materials science engineering. Brandon conducted research in circulating tumor cells at USC's Keck School of Medicine and studied tunable stiffness materials at Penn's Perelman School of Medicine.

Brandon graduated summa cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania with a B.S.E. in Materials Science, concentrating in Nanotechnology with a minor in Chemistry.

Rui Jing Jiang, CEO

Rui Jing brings experience in healthcare and regulation. Rui Jing gained corporate development, strategic marketing, and product management experience from working at Allergan and Sanofi, before working at JP Morgan as an equities analyst.

Rui Jing graduated cum laude from Wharton at the University of Pennsylvania with a B.S. in Economics, concentrating in Strategic Management and Finance.


Eydie Miller-Ellis, M.D., Scientific Advisor   Eydie Miller-Ellis, M.D. is Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology and Director of the Glaucoma Service at the Scheie Eye Institute/University of Pennsylvania. Previously, she served on the faculty of Yale University School of Medicine and of Virginia Commonwealth University/Medical College of Virginia. Dr. Miller-Ellis has lectured nationally and internationally on glaucoma diagnosis and management, and on training the eye care team. Her research interests include risk factors for the development and progression of glaucoma, pharmacological and surgical treatment of glaucoma, and diagnostic techniques.  Education:   B.A. Chemistry -  Duke University   M.D. -  University of Pittsburgh   Residency,   Ophthalmology  - University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill   Fellowship, Glaucoma  - Yale University    Distinctions:  Three-time recipient of the Surgical Teaching Award at the Scheie Eye Institute; the Suzanne Veronneau Troutman Mentorship Award from Women in Ophthalmology, the Distinguished Alumna Award from the Department of Ophthalmology at the Yale University School of Medicine and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s 2008 Achievement Award and the 2015 Senior Achievement Award. In 2014, Dr. Miller-Ellis was elected to the Academy of Master Clinicians at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. She has also been recognized by Best Doctors in America.

He draws on extensive experience at the intersection of mechanical engineering, materials science and electrical engineering under grants from the National Science Foundation, Department of Energy and Department of Defense. His research interests include the design and application of plate mechanical metamaterials, fabrication techniques for microstructures composed of ultrathin sheets, and thermionic energy conversion of heat and sunlight to electricity. Nicholas Benetatos, Ph.D., Scientific Advisor   Dr. Nicholas M. Benetatos has led both tactical and strategic regulatory activities for global fortune 100 companies in the medical device and combination product spaces.  Prior to joining the private sector, he spent 7 years at the US Food and Drug Administration in the Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) where he provided technical and regulatory expertise to aid the center in review and decision making for medical devices and combination products. Areas have included: cardiovascular devices, interventional cardiology devices, polymeric drug-delivery systems, orthopedic devices, ophthalmic devices, and active implantable electronic devices.  Nicholas has earned degrees in chemistry and physics and received his MSE and PhD in materials science and engineering from the University of Pennsylvania.
